the semento’s story

In 1912 Americo Joseph Semento, known as “Mike” left his home of Provincia Di Avellino, Italy to make his way to America. He settled in Chicago with other family members. He worked as a skilled tailor at a men’s clothier until he set up his own shop in Valparaiso’s downtown district. The tailor shop was the Semento families first business venture, but not the last.

By 1926 the Lincoln Highway (now known as U.S.30) had been completed and was a premier cross country thoroughfare. Americo thought this would be a good place to build restaurant/bar (Semento’s) and roadside motel (The Villa Court). After tending his garden, he would open the bar every day, many people would buy his fresh vegetables that he displayed in the bar. He continued to open the bar every day with the help of his son and family until he passed away in 1987 at the age of 93.

His son Americo Joseph Semento Jr, known as “Papa Joe” took control of the business and ran it with the help of his son Americo Joseph Semento III, better known as Joey. Papa Joe genuinely loved turning customers into friends as they visited the bar. Joey followed his father’s style of constantly making new friends through his wit and compassion. In 1999 Papa Joe passed away leaving control of the business to Joey.

Continuing the tradition Anthony (Tony) Semento stepped in to work with his father. Joey focused on the daily business while his wife Robin assisted with catering and Tony tended to the nightly operations. Joey’s continuous updating of the building and menu kept the business growing. Sadly, Joey passed away in June of 2012.
