There were several good reasons the state of Indiana did not pass a smoking ban.
Constitutional concerns, too much government intrusion, not wanting to legislate
morality, little things like that. Local administrators, while well intentioned, are,
trying to pass a smoking ban under the guise of protecting children (who can't
defend themselves) and adults who apparently can't be trusted to make decisions
If they really want to help children, they should tell prosecutors to chase deadbeat
dads, or find state and federal grand money to fund ideas to keep drugs and
pedophiles away from schools and our children in our neighborhoods. Let parents
teach their children not to smoke. Many Businesses have already banned smoking
voluntarily. Being on the bandwagon to ban smoking locally should be the last thing
on the agenda. I am sure there are more pressing issues for administrators to spend
their time on. Strange as it seems of of my business decisions are made by consensus
from the people, who tell me what they want by spending, or not spending their
money at my establishment. I am one of the few establishments that should temporarily
benefit from a ban, as a bar that allows smoking, till a real consensus tells me to
change. John Costas owns a bar in Michigan that is smoke free, by his choice,
while I admire his business savvy, I would like to make my own choices also.
Freedom of choice is a valued commodity.
